Aims:
To develop a thorough understanding of the theory and practice of the current state of the art of advanced database systems. This will include the theoretical basis for different database models,
Query language issues, practical issues of deployment and performance and the suitability of different systems for particular applications.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
In this unit after a preliminary reading period students will undertake an `intensive residential` 3 day programme of lectures, tutorials and practical (lab) classes followed by 7 weeks of online work, supported by `online distance` support. In the face-to -face sessions concepts, principles & theories will be introduced and explored in formal lectures, practised and discussed in tutorials, and applied and demonstrated in laboratory classes. Practical skills will be developed in tutorial and laboratory sessions. Oral feedback will be given during labs and tutorials. This will then be followed by further reading and practical work undertaken by the students with online support and feedback.
Coursework will assess the application of practical skills to the knowledge base of the module and the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor, addressing selection and implementation of suitable systems and data representations for a number of real world scenarios.
Supplementary coursework will involve repairing deficiencies in the original submission.
