Aims:
To provide knowledge of a wide range of sensors and actuators for general use. To provide the analytical skills and knowledge to specify and design simple sensor and actuator applications.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Concepts, principles and theory are explored in formal lectures and seminars, practiced in tutorials and demonstrated in laboratory classes. The laboratory classes provide ¿hands-on¿ experience and develop practical skills. Cognitive and personal skills are developed in an open-ended paper design exercise tackled by working in small groups. Oral feedback is given during laboratory classes and written feed back in individual student log books. Laboratory assessment assesses the experience gained, paper design report assessment includes the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor and the formal examination assesses the knowledge base and its use.

Outline Syllabus:
Measurement systems: purpose; structure. Static characteristics: accuracy; repeatability; non-linearity; hysteresis Dynamic characteristics: transfer function; frequency response. Noise: sources and solutions. Example active and passive sensors: optical; temperature; pressure; flow; strain; position; velocity; acceleration; sound; image; tactile; range. Actuators: linear; rotary. Signal conversion and processing: filters; deflection bridges; amplifiers; ADC; SAH; smart sensors. Application to closed loop control systems.
