Aims:
To introduce the concepts of visual literacy, visual languages and visual communication as a form of creative expression. To introduce a range of visual techniques (photography, life drawing, collage and montage and digital image making). To develop creative strategies through the use of journals and the creation of portfolio submissions.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Theoretical, contextual and technical information delivered through a combination of lectures to impart general information and knowledge, seminars where students share aspects of the practical work and practical workshops for instruction in photography, drawing and digital image making. Students apply their knowledge in practical project work with tutorial support and supervision. Students create a visual journal over the duration of the module for on-going visual research which is assessed.
Supplementary assessment requires the repair of deficiencies in the original submission.

Outline Syllabus:
What is visual literacy in the context of digital media?
Doing visual research; digital image making: techniques and processes; introduction to imaging technologies.
Imagining the audience: how do we communicate with pictures?
Framing and conventions in photography, drawing and the visual arts; editing, sketches, doodles and brainstorms; using imaging manipulation software to create, edit and enhance images.
