Aims:
The aim of this module is to provide development of key generic ethical, communication, organisational and engineering laboratory / workshop skills required of an engineering student

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
The core concepts of professional skills will be introduced in key lectures. Literature searching, referencing and report writing will be practiced by producing a publication quality short report to a set format on a discipline specific topic. This element will be set, directed and marked by the Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) within timetabled PT sessions in semester 1. The laboratory sessions provide the opportunity to gain experience in basic techniques needed for the group project. The discipline specific practical sessions and project work provide experience of time management and personal organisational skills, literature searching health and safety and report writing and oral presentation. Oral feedback will provide during the laboratory / workshop sessions. Assessment of LOs will be via the PAT directed individual report, individual laboratory report and group project work. Delivery and coordination of the discipline specific group project will be provided by academic leadership from each discipline

Outline Syllabus:
Professional skills - Report writing, presentation of technical data using diagrams, tables and graphs, referencing techniques, structure of an oral presentation, techniques for effective delivery, the use of visual aids, dealing with questions, health and safety, Time management, team working, professional ethics and sustainability. (12 hours)

Laboratory / workshop skills: Discipline specific laboratory / workshop shops needed to support the both group design project (24 hours)

Group design project. This will be discipline specific practical project based around design, build and test tasks. The group project will be run as a competition (36 hours)
