Aims:
To develop mathematical knowledge, understanding and skills in fundamental topics of mathematics so that students can later build on these to describe, model, analyse and evaluate electrical or mechanical or civil or medical and general engineering problems using a range of mathematical techniques and appropriate software for calculations (Matlab).

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Theory, calculation methodologies and applications are delivered in lectures, exercise classes and discipline tutorial groups. Discipline skills are assessed in a classroom test with oral and, when required, written feedback. The wider learning outcomes of the module area assessed in the final closed-book examination.

Outline Syllabus:
Algebra: manipulation, linear and quadratic equations; powers and roots; exponential and logarithmic forms.
Co-ordinate geometry; graphs in Cartesian and polar co-ordinates.
Complex numbers; algebra and properties; polar and exponential forms; applications to general and electrical engineering systems.
Elementary vector algebra; lines and planes.
Matrices; definitions, basic algebra, linear systems, applications to general and electrical engineering systems.
Functions; general concepts, composition, specific functions, trigonometric and hyperbolic functions, inverses and limits.
Differentiation; definitions and rules.
Integration: definitions, techniques.
Applications of differentiation and Integration to general and electrical engineering systems.
Ordinary Differential Equations; first and second order equations, applications to general and electrical engineering systems.
Sequences, series and power series.
Difference equations; first and second-order difference equations.
Numerical methods; errors, solution to equations, numerical integration.
General and particular Engineering applications and context will be explored at every opportunity.
