Aims:
To enable students to acquire a sound understanding of the concepts and methods of modern operations management in both production and service organisations, and evaluate the effectiveness of these in the context of case studies.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Concepts, theories and principles explored in formal lectures supported by video presentation and case studies and practiced in tutorials. Practical, cognitive and personal skills developed in open-ended problem solving exercises, tackled by working in small groups supported by members of academic staff. Oral feedback is given during tutorials. The formal assessment will examine the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor.

Operations Management: Overview of the development and practices of operations management in both manufacturing and service sectors. The strategic role of operations management in manufacturing and services. Design of the operations network and production flow in both manufacturing and services. Materials Requirements Planning; The philosophy and practices of Just-in-Time production systems; Assembly line balancing; Production scheduling. Scientific Management, Taylorism, Socio-Technical Systems. Examples of operations management systems in both manufacturing and services.
