Aims:
To consolidate design awareness and critically evaluate why artefacts take the form they do. To develop and encourage entrepreneurial skills and creativity within a commercial context.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Theoretical aspects of production, innovation, finance and marketing will be delivered by web- based learning and residential seminars. Evidence based learning will be delivered as case studies exploring prototyping, product development and sustainability, which will be evaluated by the students via on-line tutorials. Practical application of discipline skills acquired by the students will be appraised by individual work-based coursework project

Outline Syllabus:
Criteria for a good design, review of successful products and innovations, divergent and convergent thinking in creative design, TRIZ. Visualisation, in design, morphological matrix. Characteristics of the innovator, world class companies that innovate.1. Recycling, total life cycle analysis, developing environmentally friendly products. Barriers to innovation..2. New product functional appeal, economic appeal, aesthetic appeal and ergonomic appeal.3. Time to market, rapid product design, the design chain, rapid prototyping and time compression technologies.4. New product development, new product failure, the product adoption process, pricing effective segmentation, commercialisation, advertising and international marketing. Market research techniques, design of users trials new product evaluation. Patenting procedures, on-line searches, methods of obtaining venture capital, networking with business development agencies. .
