Aims:
1 Critical evaluation of terminal design requirements and technological, algorithmic and ergonomic constraints.2. Evaluation of requirements for reconfigurable, multi-functional terminals.3. To explore the potential of software radio systems.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Concepts, principles and theories explored in formal lectures, practiced in tutorials and demonstrated in laboratory classes. Practical skills developed in laboratory sessions. Cognitive and personal skills developed in open-ended problem solving and design exercises, tackled by working in small groups supported by members of academic staff. Oral feedback is given during labs and seminars. Written assessment will assess understanding of the knowledge base of the module, the coursework will assess the wider learning outcomes expressed in the descriptor. Supplementary assessment is to repair deficiencies in original submission.

Outline Syllabus:
Basic considerations of terminal design.
Standards: the need for a roaming terminal, adaptable to different air-interface standards, re-configurable multi-band, multi-mode operation.
Services: speech, video and data.
Technologies: existing and future terminals, features, HCI/GUI, interfaces, Bluetooth, ergonomics, technological constraints, driving technologies, DSP, ASIC, FPGA; architectures and implementation: terminal, sub-system, chip, silicon trends; power technology, antenna design.
Algorithms: adaptive equalization, adaptive reconfiguration of encoding, convolutional and turbo, code rates, constraint lengths, data rates, constraints on BER and delay, SOVA, MAP, software radio, analogue versus digital processing, ADC/DAC rates and power/complexity issues.
