Aims:
To enable students to further develop their research and problem solving skills to a high level, by advanced work on a workplace based engineering quality improvement project; to allow students to develop the skills of writing a formal academic report / dissertation.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Short-course style delivery of training material in the area of Engineering Quality Improvement and induction to research methods; workplace based project selection, planning and execution, supported by regular review meetings with academic supervisor and company / industrial mentor.

Outline Syllabus:
Short course material will cover key tools supporting Systems Engineering through Failure Mode Avoidance (function analysis, failure analysis tools such as FMEA and FTA, robustness improvement and design verification worksheet), and other broader EQI tools focused on statistically based methodologies (designed experiments, measurement systems analysis, reliability and life modelling).

The advanced research project will revolve around an industrial / workplace based case study of engineering improvement / problem solving, based on a creative and critical application of the above tools, in a rigorously planned and conducted investigation.
