Aims:
To provide students with in-depth knowledge on wireless senor network architecture, network operations and protocols, RFID operations and related standards.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
A wide range of teaching and learning environments will be used. Concepts, principles and theories are generally explored in formal lectures, practised in associated tutorials. Supplementary assessment is to repair deficiencies in original.

1.1 Master the essential components on the development of wireless communication networks and digital communication principles;
1.2 Master the evolution and latest developments in wireless sensor networks including WLAN and WPAN and appreciate the underlying concepts behind the network architecture design and protocols of wireless sensor networks; 1.3 Master the development of RFID, their potential applications and related standards.

Outline Syllabus:
Semester 1

Wireless Networks Concepts and Standards: WLAN (IEEE802.11x, Infrastructure and Ad Hoc mode); WPAN (IEEE802.15.4, Bluetooth, Zigbee); MANET (IETF); Mobility Support; Network Topology: Mesh, Star, Clusters; Digital Communications fundamentals: Baseband processes - sampling, quantisation and PCM; IF modulation - ASK, FSK, QPSK, constant envelope forms, TFM, GMSK, higher order schemes, 16 QAM, star-QAM, synchronisation; Multiple Access - Fixed Assignment (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA), Demand Assignment (Centralised and Distributed), Random Access (Pure Aloha, Slotted Aloha, CSMA); Channel and error control coding; Wireless Sensor Network Fundamentals, Wireless Sensor Network Architecture



Semester 2

Communication Protocols: Energy Efficient Medium Access Control protocols, Routing - IETF Ad Hoc Routing Protocols, Data Centric Routing Protocols; RFID fundamentals,Transport Layer protocols.
