Aims:
To engender specialist knowledge and understanding of clinical signals measurement and analysis both in theory and practice. To develop mathematical skills in relation to clinical signals and an understanding of the body as an electric machine. To be able to evaluate non-linear signals in clinical terms.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
The factual basis, concepts and principles of the subject will be introduced through lectures in which routine analysis will be demonstrated. The material is reinforced through whole-group seminars. Tutorial exercises, recommended texts and lecture notes provided enable students to consolidate what they have learned. In the remaining time, students have the opportunity to reflect on, explore and extend their knowledge and understanding and to prepare for the formal examination that assesses their understanding of the subject.

Outline Syllabus:
* The body as an electrical machine. The physiological origin of electrical activity.* The electrocardiogram (ECG). ECG as an inverse Thompson problem.* The electroencephalogram (EEG).* Temperature measurement. Electrical measurement techniques.* Linear and non-linear signals concepts. Stationary and non-stationary signals concepts.* Clinical data as non-linear time series. Non-linear time series analysis. Noise reduction. Case study: separation of maternal and foetal ECG.* Clinical decision support tools.
