Aims:
(1) To introduce the concepts of computer networks and the Internet
(2) To provide a detailed knowledge base for the various advanced networking protocols used in communication networks.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
This module will be delivered through a series of lectures supported by directed study and reinforced through tutorial exercises and seminars, whereby theoretical, critical analysis and design skills will be developed and be assessed by examination. Oral feedback is given during tutorial sessions.

1. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the various advanced protocols used for Network Security, Transport layer protocol, multicasting as well as MAC and ad hoc routing procotols for sensor networks.
2. Demonstrate the use of advanced knowledge of protocols to design efficient computer networks and specify the use of different protocols to provide various network services.

Outline Syllabus:
The module will be based around the following areas;
1. Network Fundamentals: Protocols and Protocol Architecture - The IP protocol architecture and the OSI Model; The Internet and basic networking principles; Connectivity including Connection and Connectionless;
2. Network Security: Fundamentals for Secure Communication, Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting protocol (RADIUS, Diameter), EAP, IEEE802.1x;
3. IP Multicast techniques: Group management protocols (IGMP, MLD), multicast routing protocols (DVMRP, PIM-SM, PIMD-DM), Reliable Multicast
4. Transport Layer Protocol: TCP, UDP, flow control and congestion control mechanisms;
5. MAC Layer protocol: IEEE 802.11 - CSMA and its variants, power aware protocols, duty cycle
6. Routing Protocols: ad hoc routing protocols, routing protocols in wireless sensor networks
