Aims:
To provide key skills development which enables students to research, develop and communicate facts, concepts and reasoned arguments, within the context of their chosen discipline, via the use of computer technology.

Learning Teaching & Assessment Strategy:
Principles will be introduced in lectures and applied in tutorials. Practical skills will be developed in tutorials, laboratory sessions and skill development workshops.

Outline Syllabus:
Information Technology - use of Internet for information deployment and retrieval. Electronic files: management, compression and transfer. Introduction to databases. Effective word processing: templates, styles, equations, drawing, Table Of Contents, tables; Spreadsheets for engineers & technologists: formatting, formulae, graphical presentation of data, equation fitting, data sorting, lookup tables, solver, goal seek. Automation of spreadsheet calculations: macros. Presentation package: application of principles of good visual aids to a computer projection format.

Communication Technology - model of communication, the importance of the receiver, sources of noise, selection of appropriate method of communication, the structure of an effective communication (the 4Ps and `tell them three times` models), recognising quality in professional work (the SOLO taxonomy, acknowledging source materials, clarity of purpose), the link between clear definition of `problem` and a `relational` `possibilities` and use a problem solving strategy (IDEAL) to achieve this, the formal structure of a technical report and inter-relations with the communication models, tools for undertaking and refining literature searches, conventions for the use of language to obtain clarity of expression, presentation of technical data using diagrams, tables and graphs, referencing techniques, structure of an oral presentation, techniques for effective delivery, the use of visual aids, dealing with questions.
