School of Computing, Informatics and Media
Welcome Activities Information for January 2012

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the School of Computing, Informatics and Media and hope you will enjoy your time with us. Here we will take you through what you need to do next, step-by-step. Read this information thoroughly and please complete all the steps for a smooth enrolment and Induction!

Enrolment

All students should enrol on Thursday 19th January 2012, see your Welcome Activities Timetable for further details.

All students are required to complete the Pre-Enrolment Portal (PEP) online.  You will receive instructions on how to do this by email. When you access the PEP you will be able to activate your University username and password.  Upon completion of the PEP you should be able to print out your enrolment summary.  You MUST take this summary with you to enrolment along with any documentation requested if you have not uploaded this already.

Welcome Activities

Welcome activities start on Friday 20th January 2012 and are essential as they provide you with the best start at University in so many ways.  Progressing to a Masters Course can be a big change from a first degree or the working environment. Your expectations may be different to what is actually expected of you, and you may need to learn new ways of problem solving and using your initiative, as well as managing your own workload. Welcome activities will start to look at some of these steps. You will find out how the School fits together as a whole, where you fit in, meet your tutors and of course make new friends with peers on your course. In addition, you will be introduced to all the support you will need, such as study skills, library support, the Student Support Assistants and how you can access these services.

For these reasons, you are expected to attend all Welcome Activities on your Welcome Activities Timetable. Please note that this timetable may be subject to change.

Please try to print out your welcome timetable prior to arrival. If you are unable to do so you may obtain this from the Student Support Office (Horton Building D0 foyer).

Tasks to do now

Learning and Behaviour Agreement

Once you have received your University username and password you will be able to complete a Learning and Behaviour Agreement (LBA).  Without completing the LBA you will not have access to all computer facilities or access to computer rooms (labs).  It is possible that you may receive your username and password before arriving for enrolment in which case you can complete the LBA before you get here. Note that the deadline for completing your LBA is Friday 10th February 2012.

Personal Safety Awareness Course

Please complete the Personal Safety Awareness Course in order to gain access to computer labs. Without this you will not be able to access labs outside normal office hours.

Log in to Blackboard at http://blackboard.brad.ac.uk/, click on the link 'SCIM Induction' under 'My Organisations' on the right hand side. This will take you to the 'Personal Safety' online questionnaire. Please read through this and tick to agree.) Note that it may take a few days after you have completed the on-line Personal Safety Course before your card is activated.

Find your timetable for classes

The semester will commence on Monday 23rd January 2012.  Depending on the course you are on, you may have timetabled classes on the morning of this date.

You will be able to access your ‘Teaching Timetable’ (the timetable for all your classes) a couple of weeks before the semester begins on the SCIM Intranet at: http://internal.scim.brad.ac.uk/sso/timetables.php. (NOTE that you will not be able to access your Teaching Timetable until you have received your username and password.)

  • If you have problems accessing the SCIM Intranet, please e-mail ts@scim.brad.ac.uk or ring 01274 233903.

Module Options

Once you have completed your enrolment as a student, you will automatically be registered onto your core modules.  The courses below also have optional modules in the coming semester which need to be chosen by yourself.  Please complete the options form below and return this to the Student Support Office D0 Foyer, Horton Building no later than Thursday 26th January 2012.

Read your Student Handbook

The student handbook is a crucial source of information which you will use throughout your time at University. Some sections will be particularly relevant to you right now. By reading this you will avoid making mistakes, which may cost you in the long run. It may seem like a long time before you will be submitting assignments, but it is important to understand the implications of submitting work late, for example. You can find you student handbook at: http://internal.scim.brad.ac.uk/sso/student-handbook.php (only when you have received your university username and password).

Check your University E-mails

The School relies heavily on e-mail to communicate with students.  Important and/or urgent information will be sent to you via e-mail.  Please get into the habit of checking your e-mails at least once a day. Please use your University email account when contacting members of staff. E-mail from unfamiliar accounts are treated as junk mail and deleted. Outlook Live can be accessed through the University Intranet at http://www.bradford.ac.uk/lss/it-services/email/ or alternatively via a link from the SCIM student Intranet.

Log on to our Social Networking site and make new friends

The University has its own social networking site called Develop:me. It is a great way to make connections with people on your course before you arrive, and chat about concerns or ask questions, in a safe environment. Go to Develop:me at: http://developme.ning.com/ and register now.
